It's called a monstrance, and holds a sacramental wafer on special occasions.

Yes. I'm Roman Rite Catholic. We have this in church. It was invented in medieval times to display a sacramental wafer or sometimes relics.

The center portion is made of glass crystal front and back, and the decorations on the outside are called a sunburst. Not all monstrances have this design, but I think it's the most common. :)

I guess so, tho a lot of Catholic stuff shows up in Gothic art. :) I'd categorize it as a religious object tho, like a cross.
